Opposition Disrupts Lok Sabha Over Voter List Review Amidst Monsoon Session
Lok Sabha Session Faces Opposition Disruption
Since the commencement of the monsoon session, the Lok Sabha has witnessed significant disruptions from opposition members regarding the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar. On Friday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla advised the protesting members, stating that the public has granted them a substantial opportunity, which should not be squandered through shouting slogans and displaying placards.
The monsoon session began on July 21, marking the 10th day of proceedings today. During this period, only on Tuesday and Wednesday did the question hour proceed without interruption.
Aside from a special discussion on Operation Sindoor and the approval of a statutory resolution to extend President's Rule in Manipur, no significant legislative work has been accomplished.
On Friday, as soon as the session commenced, opposition MPs began shouting slogans regarding the SIR issue, demanding a discussion on the matter. Their uproar led to the meeting being adjourned shortly after it began, with proceedings suspended until 2 PM, preventing the question hour from taking place.
Before announcing the adjournment, Speaker Birla urged the protesting members to maintain the dignity of the house. He emphasized that the question hour is a crucial time and that they should not deprive other members of their rights through disruptive behavior.
He remarked, 'You are not expressing the public's voice by shouting slogans and waving placards. Do not waste the significant opportunity the public has given you.'
Birla pointed out that such behavior is inappropriate for senior members and stressed the importance of allowing questions to be raised to ensure government accountability.
He further encouraged the protesting MPs, saying, 'I urge you daily to allow the proceedings to continue. Let MPs raise questions, fulfill the expectations and aspirations of the people, and contribute to the nation's progress. Share your views on the changes happening in the country.'
