Call for Parliamentary Statements on Student Protests

On Monday, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president and leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to address the recent actions taken against student protests and allegations of missing funds in Parliament. Speaking to reporters, Kharge emphasized the necessity for both leaders to clarify the government's stance on these pressing issues. He stated, 'We want the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to come to the House and present their views. What is their position on the issue of missing funds?'

Criticism of Government's Response to Student Protests

Kharge criticized the central government for its handling of the student protests that occurred on July 20 at Jantar Mantar, alleging excessive use of force against demonstrators. He claimed that students were beaten, pellet guns were deployed, and tear gas was used, questioning the rationale behind such actions. 'Both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister should take responsibility and make statements in Parliament,' he asserted.

Accusations of Evasion by the Prime Minister

Additionally, Kharge accused the Prime Minister of avoiding Parliament, which he believes undermines democratic accountability. He remarked that instead of addressing the House, the Prime Minister should either come to Parliament or hold a press conference to respond to the nation. Earlier in the day, Kharge reiterated his demands in a post on social media, seeking clarification from the Home Minister regarding the alleged use of force against student protesters and urging the Prime Minister to respond to accusations related to donations for the Ram Temple.

The opposition has ramped up its attacks on the government regarding the police actions during the protest march led by the 'Cockroach People’s Party' (CJP) on July 20. They allege that students faced baton charges and were shot at with pellet guns.
