Opposition Celebrates Victory as Amit Shah's Statement on Police Action Demanded
Opposition's Call for Accountability
On Thursday, CPI MP P. Santosh Kumar hailed the recent developments as a significant victory for the entire opposition. This came after the Rajya Sabha Chairman instructed Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to convey the opposition's request to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The opposition has been pressing for Shah to address the alleged police baton charge that occurred on July 20 during a protest.
Kumar emphasized that the opposition has persistently sought Shah's statement in Parliament and is now eagerly awaiting his response.
Congress Leader's Appeal
In a related context, Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, urged the government to ensure that Home Minister Amit Shah provides a statement regarding the police actions during the protests on July 20. He stated that while the opposition desires smooth proceedings in the house, it also expects the government to address the raised concerns.
Speaking to reporters, Kharge mentioned that the Rajya Sabha Chairman had directed Minister Rijiju to ensure that the Home Minister appears in the house to discuss this matter.
Demand for Transparency
Kharge remarked, "This is a straightforward demand and entirely within the government's control. It remains unclear why they have not yet appeared. The Rajya Sabha Chairman has instructed the Parliamentary Affairs Minister that the Home Minister should address this incident in the house. Rijiju alone does not have the authority to resolve this issue; he merely relays the matter, which then tends to be forgotten."
