Call for Parliamentary Discussion

On Tuesday, a coalition of sixteen opposition parties in India sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting a special session of Parliament to address the recent Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire announcement by US President Trump.

Following a meeting of the INDIA alliance, Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda stated, "The sixteen political parties have urged PM Modi to convene a special session. In light of the Pahalgam terrorist incident and the ongoing conflict with Pakistan, all opposition parties have rallied behind our armed forces and the Indian government. With the US announcing a ceasefire, it is imperative that Parliament convenes to express gratitude to our military. We need to discuss these critical issues, including strategies to combat terrorism, within the Parliament. The government should present its stance in Parliament just as it does on the global stage."

Voices from the Opposition

TMC MP Derek O’Brien remarked, "The letter emphasizes the need for open discussions in Parliament regarding incidents in Poonch, Uri, and Rajouri. The government must be accountable to Parliament, which in turn is accountable to the public. This is why we are advocating for a special session. The parties involved include the Indian National Congress, Samajwadi Party, AITC, DMK, Shiv Sena (UBT), RJD, Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, CPI (M), IUML, CPI, RSP, JMM, VCK, Kerala Congress, MDMK, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation. AAP plans to send a direct letter to the PM tomorrow."

Concerns Over Diplomatic Support

SP MP Ram Gopal Yadav expressed concerns about India's diplomatic standing, stating, "We need to understand which nations supported us during this crisis. It is troubling that no country has come forward to back India. This indicates a failure on the diplomatic front. The announcement of a ceasefire by US President Trump has led the public to feel that we were compelled into this truce, diminishing our respect globally."

The Opposition's Stance

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut added, "The letter, signed by sixteen political parties, is significant. The opposition represents the people's voice. We demand a special session to discuss the events that have transpired in our country. If a ceasefire was initiated at President Trump's suggestion, why can't we have a special session despite repeated requests from the opposition? Should we seek President Trump's intervention for this?"
