OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT Memory Feature for All Users

Significant Update to ChatGPT's Memory Functionality

OpenAI has introduced a substantial upgrade to the memory feature of ChatGPT, enhancing the user experience for both free and paid subscribers. Previously, this capability was exclusive to those who paid for the service, but now it allows free users to maintain the context of their past conversations, resulting in a more fluid and relevant dialogue.

As per OpenAI's support documentation, this enhancement began rolling out to free users on June 3, 2025. ChatGPT can now reference recent chat histories across different sessions, enabling it to provide consistent and tailored responses based on user preferences and instructions.

OpenAI clarifies that the system does not solely depend on saved memories; it also considers recent interactions temporarily. This allows ChatGPT to deliver more precise and context-aware answers without the need for users to repeatedly state their preferences.

For those unfamiliar, ChatGPT's memory is structured to retain information from prior conversations. For instance, if a user expresses a dislike for the 'em dash' or requests responses in a specific tone, ChatGPT can incorporate these preferences into future interactions, fostering a more personalized and coherent conversation over time.

Memory Management Options for Users

While this upgrade marks a significant improvement, free plan users still face certain limitations. Reports indicate that the memory feature in the free version only allows for short-term retention, whereas ChatGPT Plus or Pro users benefit from comprehensive access to older session memories.

Users who prefer not to have their information stored can completely disable the memory feature or delete specific memories through the settings. Additionally, there is a 'temporary chat' option, akin to private browsing, which does not retain any data.

This update is viewed as a major advancement in making ChatGPT more user-friendly and adaptable.
