Online Movement 'Cockroach People's Party' Gains Momentum Before Account Suspension
Rise of the Cockroach People's Party
Following remarks made by the Chief Justice, the online movement known as the 'Cockroach People's Party' has seen its X account banned. This satirical political movement emerged in response to the Chief Justice's comments on youth issues in India, sparking a sharp reaction on social media and becoming a viral sensation. The Instagram account operating under the handle '@cockroachjantaparty' amassed over 10 million followers in just five days, surpassing the official Instagram followers of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Currently, the official Instagram account of the BJP has around 8.7 million followers, while the Indian National Congress boasts approximately 13.2 million followers. The Aam Aadmi Party, established in 2012, has about 1.9 million followers on Instagram. The online movement has gained traction through satire, viral reels, and political commentary, quickly becoming a hub for internet users expressing their frustrations on various political and social issues.
Support from Public Figures and Influencers
Numerous prominent public figures, social media influencers, and political personalities have either supported or reacted to this trend. Notable YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, and politician Mahua Moitra have commented on the phenomenon. Reports indicate that TMC leader Kirti Azad has also shown interest in joining this satirical movement. Bhushan emphasized that the growing online support for the Cockroach People's Party should be leveraged to address serious public interest issues, including the NEET paper leak controversy.
In a post on X, Bhushan stated that if this platform is utilized wisely and creatively, it could become influential. He called for accountability in the NEET case and urged discussions on employment rights and unemployment assistance. Despite the significant online following, observers caution that such popularity does not necessarily translate into political power or grassroots organizational presence.
