Availability of Zubeen Garg's Ashes

Guwahati, Sept 24: The state government has revealed that the ashes of the renowned cultural figure Zubeen Garg will be accessible to both organizations and individuals through a forthcoming online application system.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu stated that the Cultural Affairs Department will manage the new portal, which is set to launch soon.

"The Assam government will introduce a straightforward portal allowing organizations and institutions to request the ashes of their cherished artist. The Cultural Department will supervise this initiative," he explained.

Pegu also mentioned that individuals could apply for the ashes, contingent on availability. "If there are any remains left after fulfilling organizational requests, individual applications will be considered by the department," he added.

Additionally, as previously indicated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a portion of the ashes will be transported to Jorhat, where there was a request for Garg's cremation. The singer had spent significant time in this eastern town during his youth.

"The rituals associated with the 13th day after his passing will take place in Jorhat. A memorial will also be constructed there, with the location to be determined soon," the minister noted.

In the meantime, construction of the boundary wall at Garg’s memorial site in Kamarkuchi commenced on Tuesday night. Following the funeral, local women organized a community cleaning effort at the cremation area.

"The area where the pyre was erected will be secured starting tonight. Temporary barriers are already in place, and work on a permanent boundary wall will begin tonight," Pegu informed the media on Tuesday.

He also mentioned that a police camp will be established at Kamarkuchi for security purposes, while the site will remain accessible for the public to pay their respects.

Garg was cremated at Kamarkuchi on Tuesday with full state honors, as thousands of fans gathered to pay their last respects to the beloved singer-composer.
