Omar Abdullah Discusses Key Issues with Amit Shah in New Delhi
Meeting Between Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister and Home Minister
In New Delhi, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of Jammu and Kashmir held discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The two leaders engaged in an in-depth conversation regarding several significant issues pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir. This meeting is deemed crucial as the central government has numerous important files from the Jammu and Kashmir administration awaiting final approval.
A senior leader from the National Conference highlighted that the absence of operational rules under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act of 2019 has hindered administrative functions since the formation of an elected government in 2024. The leader pointed out that the roles of the Chief Minister and the Lieutenant Governor are not clearly defined in various departments, complicating governance and making it challenging for the Chief Minister to effectively exercise his powers.
Pending Recommendations and Appointments
Reports indicate that the Jammu and Kashmir government is also awaiting the central government's final approval on the recommendations from a three-member committee related to the reservation policy, which was submitted to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha last April. This report aimed to review the existing reservation system, which has reduced the share of the open merit category in government educational institutions and departments to just 30%. Following the formation of the government in October 2024, Omar Abdullah's administration had proposed the establishment of a subcommittee to increase the open category's share to 50%. Additionally, the Jammu and Kashmir government has submitted files regarding the appointment of a new Advocate General to the center, but the position has remained vacant since 2024 due to a lack of approval.
Chief Minister's Priorities
Before departing for Delhi, the Chief Minister spoke to reporters in Srinagar, stating that he would raise all major issues concerning the Union Territory with the Home Minister. He emphasized that restoring the state's status will also be among his top priorities.
