A Warm Welcome to the Ceasefire

Srinagar: The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, expressed his support for the recently announced ceasefire between India and Pakistan, stating that it is a welcome development, albeit delayed.

In a statement to the press at his residence, Abdullah said, “I wholeheartedly welcome the announcement from the Government of India regarding the ceasefire restoration between India and Pakistan.”

He further remarked, “While it's better late than never, had this ceasefire been established a few days earlier, we might have prevented the tragic loss of lives and bloodshed.”

Abdullah noted that the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) from Pakistan had reached out to his Indian counterpart, leading to the agreement on the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir and other regions.

He emphasized the responsibility of the Jammu and Kashmir government to offer relief and compensation to those affected during this tumultuous period. “We have initiated compensation for the loss of lives, and we must also address the needs of those who have sustained injuries,” he stated.

The Chief Minister highlighted the significant destruction caused by cross-border shelling and attacks in areas such as Jammu, Poonch, Rajouri, and Tangdhar.

He also expressed hope for the resumption of Hajj flights, which had been halted due to the airport's closure, preventing pilgrims from traveling.
