A Love Story That Crossed Boundaries
Years ago, in a luxurious hotel in Delhi, two young hearts met, sparking a conversation that blossomed into friendship and eventually love. Overcoming religious barriers, Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah (formerly Payal Nath) decided to commit to each other for life. However, not every love story concludes happily. Nearly thirty years after it began, their relationship reached its final chapter in the Supreme Court, which approved their mutual divorce petition, legally ending their marriage.
The Beginning of Their Journey
Omar and Payal first crossed paths at the prestigious Oberoi Hotel in Delhi, where both were employed. At that time, Omar worked as a marketing executive for the hotel group, while Payal was also part of the staff. Their professional relationship deepened into romance. Payal, the daughter of retired Major General Ramnath, and Omar, the son of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, chose to rise above their different familial and religious backgrounds, marrying on September 1, 1994.
Family Life and Growing Tensions
Following their marriage, the couple welcomed two sons, Zahir and Zamir. From the outside, their relationship appeared to be that of an ideal family, but cracks began to form over time. Omar later revealed in court that since 2007, their marital relationship had deteriorated, and they had been living separately since 2009. He claimed that the marriage was irreparably broken and that he suffered mental anguish due to Payal's behavior.
Legal Battles and Court Proceedings
The legal battle was fraught with challenges. Omar initially sought a divorce on grounds of cruelty, but his petition was dismissed by the family court in 2016. The Delhi High Court upheld this decision in December 2023, stating that Omar failed to prove allegations of cruelty or abandonment against his wife.

The case eventually reached the Supreme Court, where in July 2024, the court sought a response from Payal, as Omar challenged the High Court's ruling. During this time, both parties opted for mediation to resolve their long-standing disputes amicably.
Final Approval from the Supreme Court
During a hearing on Friday, senior advocate Kapil Sibal informed Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe that both parties had resolved all marital disputes and jointly filed a petition for divorce under Article 142 of the Constitution. Sibal stated, "Both have accepted their freedom. All disputes have been settled. Please grant the divorce approval." He also mentioned that a joint application was submitted on July 22, under which both parties would withdraw all pending cases against each other.
Financial Arrangements and Child Support
Throughout this lengthy legal struggle, the issue of alimony also reached the courts. In August 2023, the Delhi High Court ordered Omar to pay Payal an interim alimony of ₹1.5 lakh per month, along with ₹60,000 each for their sons' education. This ruling came in response to petitions challenging a lower court's decision that had ordered Omar to pay ₹75,000 to Payal and ₹25,000 to each son monthly.
The End of an Era
What began as a relationship founded on love, trust, and promises of togetherness approximately 32 years ago has now concluded through a court-sanctioned agreement. This is not merely a high-profile divorce; it marks the final chapter of a love story that once transcended religious divides.
