Encouragement for Democratic Traditions
On Friday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed the newly elected members of the West Bengal Assembly, urging them to maintain democratic traditions, embrace innovative ideas, and work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the populace. He emphasized that achieving the vision of a 'Developed India' by 2047 necessitates a progressive West Bengal. Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day orientation program for the newly elected legislators, Birla stated that each MLA represents not only their constituency but also the collective aspirations of the entire state.
Call for Constructive Dialogue
Birla called on the members to rise above political differences and engage in constructive dialogue to strengthen democratic institutions. He highlighted West Bengal's rich historical legacy, noting its significant contributions to India's social reform movements, the struggle for independence, spirituality, culture, and intellectual renaissance. Referring to the slogan 'Vande Mataram,' he urged the legislators to preserve and enrich the state's heritage, spiritual consciousness, and cultural renaissance.
Advice for First-Time Legislators
Birla advised first-time legislators to continuously learn from senior members, study the proceedings of past assembly sessions, and enhance their legislative skills. He encouraged representatives to remain open to new ideas and adopt innovative approaches in their work. Stressing the growing role of technology in governance, he urged MLAs to stay updated in the era of artificial intelligence and digitalization to effectively address new challenges and meet public expectations.
Importance of Listening and Understanding
He also urged members to be present during assembly proceedings for as long as possible and to attentively listen to the views of their fellow legislators. Birla stated that true understanding comes not just from speaking but from listening, comprehending diverse perspectives, and providing creative solutions. He emphasized that democratic dialogue is the foundation of a vibrant democracy, where dissent and debate are natural but must always be conducted with dignity, mutual respect, and adherence to parliamentary traditions.
Focus on the Needs of the Underprivileged
According to Birla, legislators should prioritize addressing the challenges faced by the most impoverished and marginalized sections of society, while also fulfilling the hopes of the people of West Bengal.
