Inauguration of Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy

Lovlina Borgohain, the Olympic bronze medalist, has officially opened her boxing academy in Barachandra, located in North Guwahati. Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced a grant of ₹2 crore for the academy's development. Established on land purchased by Borgohain in 2021, the academy aims to provide professional infrastructure for grassroots boxers, featuring a 26x26 boxing ring and a fully equipped gym. This facility is the first of its kind in Guwahati and will serve the youth of Assam and the northeastern region.

During the inauguration, Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked that a mini stadium has been constructed in honor of Lovlina Borgohain, a pride of Assam. He emphasized that development in every region of Assam has been linked to public welfare. Sarma stated that this academy represents a significant step towards identifying and nurturing the next generation of champions from Assam. He also agreed to assist Borgohain with land acquisition and costs related to building hostels for athletes.

The minister also pledged to support the academy in covering expenses related to coaching staff and its expansion. Lovlina shared that she began working on this project after the 2024 Olympics, using her personal funds to create a basic yet effective training center. She expressed her ambition to train skilled boxers capable of competing at national and international levels by 2028. The academy charges a nominal monthly fee of ₹500 and offers training for students aged 8-12, 13-18, and 18 years and above.
