Odisha's Remarkable Water Conservation Efforts: 905 Structures Completed Under Catch the Rain Campaign

Odisha's Water Management Success

New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: On Saturday, the Ministry of Jal Shakti commended Odisha for successfully establishing 905 structures aimed at rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge as part of the Catch the Rain 2026 initiative. Among these, 849 are rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, with 21 located in government facilities and 828 in private properties. Additionally, there are 56 recharge shafts designed to facilitate groundwater replenishment.

The ministry emphasized that these numbers signify more than just completed projects; they represent a shift from mere awareness to active participation. When a household installs a rainwater harvesting system, it becomes an integral part of local water management. Recharge shafts serve to connect surface rainfall with the groundwater stored beneath.

These initiatives collectively enhance irrigation and bolster local water availability, especially in regions facing heightened pressure on groundwater resources.

Furthermore, the ministry highlighted Odisha's commitment to restoring traditional water bodies, with 98 tanks across all 30 districts undergoing renovation and desilting as part of the state's strategy. The campaign gained momentum following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal during his Mann Ki Baat on June 29, urging citizens to 'conserve every drop of rainwater.'

The ministry noted, 'Odisha’s Catch the Rain campaign exemplifies how community involvement can significantly improve water conservation results. By merging awareness efforts, behavioral changes, institutional collaboration, restoration of traditional water bodies, and the establishment of groundwater recharge systems, the state is creating a robust framework for sustainable water management.'
