OHRC Takes Action Following Puri Stampede

Bhubaneswar: In light of the tragic stampede during the Rath Yatra festival in Puri, which resulted in three fatalities and approximately 50 injuries, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has urged local authorities and law enforcement to implement measures to avert similar occurrences in the future.

The OHRC's intervention follows a petition regarding the incident that has ignited widespread anger across the state. Notices have been issued to the Puri District Collector and the Superintendent of Police (SP), demanding an explanation for the stampede despite the presence of comprehensive security arrangements.

Additionally, the commission has instructed officials to ensure that adequate medical care is provided to those injured.

The unfortunate event, which took place near the chariots at Saradhabali in front of the Shree Gundicha Temple on Sunday, claimed the lives of three devotees, including two women, and left around 50 others hurt.

Both the Congress and BJD parties have criticized the state government, attributing responsibility for the incident to them.

In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his condolences to the devotees of Lord Jagannath. The government has suspended two police officers for negligence and has transferred the Puri Collector and SP immediately.

Furthermore, the chief minister announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for each affected family and has tasked the Development Commissioner with investigating the incident and providing a report within 30 days.
