Critical Review Meeting on Diarrhoea Outbreak
In Bhubaneswar, a significant review meeting took place at Lok Seva Bhawan on Thursday, led by Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling. The purpose was to evaluate and expedite the state's strategy in response to the diarrhoea outbreak affecting Odisha. The minister engaged in thorough discussions with District Magistrates from six impacted districts: Jajpur, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Kendrapara, urging them to maintain vigilance even as case numbers decline. He characterized the ongoing response as a 'war-like' initiative for the next three months, emphasizing the need for sustained readiness and collaboration as the monsoon approaches.
Minister Mahaling reviewed essential elements such as the purification of drinking water sources, readiness for treatment at all levels, sanitation measures, food safety, and inter-departmental cooperation. He called on all departments to prioritize public welfare, particularly for vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, women, and individuals with disabilities. The minister reaffirmed the government's dedication to promoting health and hygiene throughout the state, acknowledging the decrease in infection rates while stressing the importance of continued caution and proactive measures.
He highlighted the necessity of raising public awareness regarding safe drinking water practices, the use of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), hand hygiene, and the importance of seeking medical attention promptly when symptoms arise. Following directives from Health Secretary Aswathy S, a specialized joint team of Central and state experts visited Jajpur, Cuttack, and Bhadrak districts on Thursday. Their role is to oversee water purification efforts, treatment protocols, and ensure data accuracy while advising local health officials.
The meeting included participation from senior officials, including Health Secretary Ashwati S, along with district authorities who provided updates on local efforts. The Mission Shakti department is actively conducting an awareness campaign through Self-Help Group (SHG) women members, who are distributing educational materials and organizing village meetings focused on sanitation and hygiene. Additionally, the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water department has initiated extensive water purification activities, sealing contaminated wells and tubewells, and routinely testing drinking water sources.
