Odisha's Bold Initiative to Combat Drug Trafficking: A Cultural Approach
Statewide Campaign Against Drug Abuse
Bhubaneswar: The government of Odisha is set to implement a comprehensive strategy aimed at tackling illegal drug trafficking and marijuana cultivation, as announced by Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan.
Harichandan highlighted that the initiative will include raising public awareness through traditional folk performances such as Pala, Daskathia, Goti dance, roadside dramas, and essay contests in schools to educate the youth about the risks associated with drug abuse and trafficking.
Recent reports indicate a decrease in illegal drug trafficking since the current administration took office.
The Excise department, in collaboration with law enforcement and specialized teams, has been actively conducting raids, leading to the closure of numerous illegal liquor establishments and the confiscation of significant amounts of raw materials and vehicles.
Several individuals linked to this illicit trade have also been apprehended. Harichandan stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to completely eliminate the illegal drug trade in the state.
During a review meeting, he announced that an awareness campaign will run from May 31 to June 26, focusing on preventing drug use and trafficking throughout Odisha.
He underscored the crucial role of every department in this statewide initiative, stating, "The message of drug awareness must permeate every corner of the state, from school campuses to village panchayats."
To ensure the campaign's effectiveness, Harichandan called for the harmful effects of drug abuse to be highlighted through street performances in busy areas and through folk art forms like Pala and Daskathia.
He instructed senior officials to facilitate awareness through mobile vans at various administrative levels and directed the department to create a daily activity plan for the campaign.
Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja suggested organizing essay competitions on drug abuse in schools, engaging self-help groups from rural areas, and conducting ongoing awareness initiatives.
