Odisha Tops National Rankings in Urban Development with AMRUT 2.0 Success
Odisha's Urban Development Triumph
Bhubaneswar: On Tuesday, Odisha distinguished itself as a frontrunner in urban development, achieving the top rank for its effective execution and service delivery under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0.
Launched in October 2021 and set to continue until March 2027, AMRUT 2.0 aims to provide universal access to water, restore water bodies, and enhance urban infrastructure in cities.
An official announcement revealed that Odisha has secured the leading position nationwide due to its successful implementation of AMRUT 2.0.
The state has made remarkable progress across 89 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), with 345 projects approved at an estimated cost of Rs 4030.18 crore, focusing on both water supply and the rejuvenation of water bodies.
According to the state government, 99 projects under the AMRUT 2.0 initiative have already been completed, while others are advancing through various implementation phases.
The Housing and Urban Development department of Odisha reported near-total utilization of available funds, showcasing effective financial management and project execution.
Significant advancements have been made in urban water infrastructure under AMRUT 2.0, including the commissioning of seven Water Treatment Plants with a total capacity of 43 MLD, benefiting approximately 283,000 residents.
Additionally, 24/7 water supply systems have been established in major urban areas, along with over 270,000 household water connections.
Overall, these initiatives have directly benefited more than 500,000 urban dwellers.
Commenting on this achievement, Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra stated, "Achieving the top rank in AMRUT 2.0 highlights Odisha's commitment to ensuring reliable water access and enhancing urban infrastructure. Our goal is clear—every household should have safe water access, every city should operate efficiently, and every ULB should be empowered to provide better services. We are dedicated to developing cities that are resilient, inclusive, and prepared for the future, in line with the vision of a Viksit Odisha."
The department also highlighted that through initiatives like "Pay Jal Survekshan" and "Jai Hi AMRUT," Odisha has received incentives and is progressing with projects aimed at improved water management and reuse.
Community-driven efforts such as the "AMRUT Mitra and Women for Tree" programs have bolstered environmental sustainability, featuring plantation drives and waterbody restoration led by women self-help groups.
