Odisha Government Requests UNESCO Recognition

Bhubaneswar, August 3 - The Odisha government has reached out to the central government for assistance in nominating the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri for inclusion in UNESCO's list of 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.' Officials shared this information on Monday. They noted that Chief Minister Mohan Chara Majhi has sent a proposal from the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) to the central government, requesting the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to prioritize this nomination and provide necessary support and intervention.

In a letter dated August 1 to Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Chief Minister emphasized that the Rath Yatra is not merely a religious festival but a timeless civilizational tradition. He stated, 'The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is not just a religious event; it symbolizes India's rich cultural diversity, inclusivity, spirituality, craftsmanship, music, dance, and community participation.'

The Chief Minister highlighted that this centuries-old festival attracts millions of devotees and tourists from around the globe, making it one of the most enduring symbols of India's vibrant cultural heritage. He added that its inclusion in UNESCO's list would provide global recognition to India's rich intangible cultural traditions and significantly contribute to their preservation and promotion for future generations.

Majhi informed the central minister that the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration has already submitted all necessary documents in the prescribed format. He also mentioned that the Odisha government and the SJTA are ready to provide any additional information or assistance required during this process. This year's annual Puri Rath Yatra, held from July 16 to 27, saw participation from over 5 million people.
