Protests Erupt in Bhubaneswar Following Student's Death

Bhubaneswar: In a significant protest on Wednesday, Odisha Police resorted to using water cannons to break up a demonstration by Biju Janata Dal (BJD) members in Bhubaneswar. This protest was sparked by the tragic self-immolation of a student from Balasore.

As tensions rose near Lower PMG Square, law enforcement also deployed tear gas against the demonstrators, escalating the situation further.

In anticipation of the protest, security measures were heightened at the Lok Seva Bhavan, the state secretariat in Bhubaneswar.

The victim, a second-year B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, succumbed to her injuries at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar on Monday night after battling for her life for three days. She had set herself ablaze on campus on Saturday, reportedly due to the lack of action against a professor accused of sexual harassment.

The BJD is currently enforcing an eight-hour bandh in Balasore district and is calling for a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
