Government Response to Rath Yatra Tragedy

Bhubaneswar: Following a tragic event during the Rath Yatra in Puri, the Odisha government has taken decisive action by dismissing Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Superintendent of Police Vinit Agarwal. Additionally, the state has announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the families of the deceased.

Two police officers have also been suspended due to alleged failures in managing the crowd effectively. In their places, senior IAS officer Chanchal Rana has been appointed as the new District Magistrate, while IPS officer Pinak Mishra will assume the role of Superintendent of Police.

Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his condolences regarding the incident and assured that further financial and medical support would be extended to those injured.

The unfortunate incident occurred around 4 AM when two trucks carrying ceremonial items entered a crowded area near the Gundicha temple, causing panic among the large number of devotees present, according to eyewitness accounts.

At least three individuals, including two women, lost their lives, and approximately 50 others sustained injuries in the ensuing stampede.

Swain confirmed that the injured were transported to a nearby hospital, with six individuals reported to be in critical condition.

In light of the tragedy, the state government has established a high-level investigation committee led by a senior district commissioner, which is expected to deliver its report within a week.

The Rath Yatra, a major cultural and spiritual event that attracts millions of pilgrims each year, has faced public backlash, leading to urgent demands for enhanced safety protocols for future festivals.
