Odisha Congress Suspends Three MLAs for Alleged Cross-Voting in Rajya Sabha Elections
Congress Takes Action Against MLAs in Odisha
On Tuesday, the Congress party in Odisha suspended three of its legislators for allegedly voting in favor of independent candidate Dilip Rai, who is backed by the BJP, during the Rajya Sabha elections. The suspended members include Ramesh Chandra Jena from Sankhemundi, Dashrathi Gomango from Mohana, and Sofia Firdaus from Barabati-Cuttack. According to the party, these MLAs cast their votes for Rai during the elections held on Monday.
Party's Statement on Suspension
The state Congress announced the suspensions via a social media post, stating that those who betray the party are betraying the nation. Ramchandra Kadma, the leader of the Congress legislative party, has written two significant letters to the Assembly Speaker, urging further action. In the first letter, he requested the initiation of proceedings against the three MLAs under the anti-defection law.
Concerns Over Cross-Voting
The letter highlighted that despite a party whip being issued during the Rajya Sabha elections, these legislators engaged in cross-voting, which could be seen as a violation of provisions outlined in the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. It further stated that such behavior undermines party discipline and is considered a breach of the mandate given by voters. Therefore, the Speaker was urged to take cognizance of the matter and initiate necessary investigations and disqualification proceedings.
Internal Discontent Within the Party
The incident of cross-voting has revealed underlying internal differences within the party. The leadership emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline, especially as the party prepares for upcoming political elections.
