Odisha Chief Minister Addresses Concerns Over Frequent Accidents Involving Ama Buses
Chief Minister's Response to Recent Tragedy
On Sunday, Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Chara Majhi expressed serious concerns regarding the ongoing accidents involving the state-operated Ama buses. He instructed officials to provide skill development training for drivers and to foster sensitivity among them.
This directive came a day after a tragic incident where an auto-rickshaw driver lost his life due to an accident involving an Ama bus. According to police reports, the auto-rickshaw, carrying two passengers, was halted at a red light at the busy Rupali Chowk when it was struck from behind by the bus. The collision resulted in the death of the auto-rickshaw driver, while two passengers, including a student, sustained injuries.
Details of the Incident and Aftermath
An official stated that one of the injured passengers is currently receiving treatment at Capital Hospital, while the other has been discharged after medical care. The bus driver, who fled the scene post-accident, has been apprehended and charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the death of 62-year-old auto-rickshaw driver Bishnu Patra from Jajpur district and announced a compensation of four lakh rupees from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF). He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured student, Namita Pradhan, aged 21.
Measures to Enhance Driver Training and Safety
According to a statement from the Chief Minister's office, he has directed the transport department to take steps to address this issue in coordination with the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), which operates city buses. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for regular training for Ama bus drivers, focusing on their physical and mental well-being.
He specifically suggested developing a training module aimed at enhancing sensitivity among drivers. Additionally, he instructed the transport department to form a special team to conduct regular inspections of the buses.
Ongoing Efforts and Immediate Relief for Victims
Majhi advised the transport department to regularly review the situation and ensure that such unfortunate incidents do not recur. Following the Chief Minister's directives, a team led by Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur initiated an enforcement campaign at the Ama bus stand located at Master Canteen.
Furthermore, CRUT has announced immediate relief of two lakh rupees for the family of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for the injured college student.
