Odisha Braces for Heavy Rainfall: What to Expect This Week

Weather Forecast for Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating significant rainfall across various regions of Odisha until July 28.

According to the midday bulletin from the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, a cyclonic circulation, which is a remnant of tropical cyclone WIPHA, is anticipated to develop over the northern Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.

This weather pattern is expected to lead to the formation of a low-pressure area in the same vicinity.

As a result of this system, heavy rainfall is predicted for the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, and Keonjhar before 8:30 AM on Thursday, as stated by Manorama Mohanty, the director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre.

Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h are likely to affect most parts of the state, excluding the southern areas, during this period.

The IMD has issued an Orange warning (indicating preparedness) for the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Malkangiri, and Koraput for Thursday.

A Yellow warning (indicating caution) has also been issued for Sundargarh, Deogarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, and Angul, according to Mohanty.

Thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 30-40 km/h are also expected in Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts.

The director noted that the most significant effects of the anticipated low-pressure area will be felt on July 25.

Extreme rainfall is particularly expected in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar, with many regions of Odisha likely to experience heavy to moderate rainfall on that day.

Given that sea conditions are predicted to be rough, weather experts have advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea from July 24 to 27.

So far this monsoon season (June 1 to July 23), the state has recorded rainfall that is 2% above normal.
