Odisha and UNICEF Join Forces to Enhance Social Protection for Vulnerable Groups
Strengthening Social Protection Systems in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: In a collaborative effort, the Odisha government and UNICEF have embarked on a crucial initiative to enhance social protection frameworks within the state. This initiative involves the formulation of the Social Policy and Social Protection Action Plan (SPSP) for the years 2025 to 2027.
A pivotal meeting took place in Bhubaneswar, led by Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg. This gathering brought together officials from various state departments alongside UNICEF representatives to devise strategies aimed at ensuring that the most vulnerable groups in the state, particularly children, adolescents, and women, benefit from inclusive and effective policies. The action plan aims to improve the social protection systems by making them more responsive to gender issues, adaptable to climate change, and resilient to shocks. It embodies a long-term vision to weave these frameworks into the existing governance and welfare systems.
During the discussions, UNICEF’s social policy consultant, Ajay Kumar Singh, emphasized key strategic areas such as child development, socio-economic assessments, public finance dedicated to children, and the enhancement of broader social protection mechanisms within the state. Additionally, Chhattisgarh Bal Paritosh Dash, a social policy specialist from UNICEF, presented a detailed roadmap that includes partnerships with academic and research institutions like NIT Rourkela, along with various government departments. These collaborations are anticipated to bolster evidence-based policymaking and program execution in critical areas, including financing for disabilities and addressing child poverty.
