Incident Overview

On Friday morning, an officer from the NYPD sustained a leg injury during a gunfire exchange with a barricaded suspect in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant area. The suspect, Lamin Simmons, aged 48, was later shot by police and declared dead at Woodhull Hospital. Authorities responded to reports of gunfire from a two-storey brownstone on Kosciuszko Street shortly before 6 AM, following neighbors' reports of at least seven shots fired around 5:45 AM.

Upon arrival, officers attempted to enter the apartment but retreated after encountering an armed individual. Additional units, including hostage negotiators and Emergency Service Unit (ESU) officers, were called in. While Simmons' wife and son managed to exit the apartment, an elderly couple residing above remained inside. The hostage team communicated with them, advising them to secure their door.

During the standoff, Simmons reportedly threw various household items, such as a microwave and kitchenware, out of a rear window. A police drone confirmed he was armed and actively firing during the situation. Eventually, ESU officers entered the building and found Simmons at the top of the staircase, where he refused to comply with orders to drop his weapon and shot Detective Matthew Gale.

Detective Gale, a 15-year veteran, suffered a fractured left tibia and was transported to Kings County Hospital for care. At a press briefing later that day, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated she had visited the injured officer, who was in stable condition and "in good spirits." Investigators noted that Simmons fired around 20 rounds during the incident, and police recovered two firearms at the scene—a Beretta and a .380-caliber handgun—though it remains unclear which was discharged.

Authorities suspect the confrontation may have originated from a dispute involving Simmons and the elderly couple, and they noted his history of mental health issues. A neighbor expressed disbelief over the incident, recalling Simmons as a devoted father to his twin sons, who are around 17 or 18 years old. "I don't know what could've transpired that could've led up to this," the neighbor remarked. Police confirmed that Simmons had prior interactions with law enforcement, although many details of his record are sealed.
