Nuwan Thushara's Legal Withdrawal

Nuwan Thushara, the Sri Lankan fast bowler, has decided to retract his lawsuit against Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) just weeks after initiating it. The lawsuit was related to his denial of a no-objection certificate (NOC) required for participation in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Thushara, who plays for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, informed the Colombo District Court of his decision to withdraw, citing that a significant portion of the tournament had already concluded.

Apology and Intent to Resolve

As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Thushara submitted a written apology to SLC last week, indicating his desire to settle the issue amicably and withdraw from legal actions. In his initial court filing, he expressed a wish to retire from international cricket, although it remains uncertain whether this stance has changed.

Background of the NOC Dispute

Thushara's request for a no-objection certificate was denied by SLC, which is essential for Sri Lankan players wishing to participate in foreign leagues like the IPL. The board cited his failure to meet specific fitness standards as the reason for the denial. Thushara contested this decision, arguing that his fitness levels had not significantly changed from previous years when he had received clearance.

During the dispute, Thushara indicated his intention to retire and subsequently filed a lawsuit, claiming that the abrupt implementation of stricter fitness requirements for NOCs was unjust and jeopardized his career. He was slated to play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026, having participated in the previous seasons of IPL 2024 and 2025. The franchise retained him for IPL 2026 at a price of Rs 1.60 crore.
