The police department in Nurpur has categorically dismissed misleading and communal allegations circulating on various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, regarding a video that purportedly depicts the assault of two women. Authorities stated that certain individuals are propagating false narratives by framing the incident in a communal context, which is entirely unfounded.

Details of the Incident

As per the official announcement, the situation is strictly a law-and-order issue stemming from an alleged attempt at chain-snatching that escalated into a mob attack. The police confirmed that there is no communal dimension to this case. An FIR (No. 188/2026) has been lodged at the Nurpur Police Station under Sections 126(2), 115(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Investigation Findings

Further inquiries have indicated that both women featured in the video have several cases against them in Punjab related to the ND&PS Act and theft or chain-snatching offenses. Additionally, another FIR (No. 189/2026) has been registered in Nurpur under Sections 304 and 3(5) BNS concerning chain-snatching. The police have assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is in progress, and appropriate legal measures will be taken based on the evidence collected.

The Nurpur Police stressed that no one has the authority to take the law into their own hands, and they are treating the assault aspect of the incident with utmost seriousness. Citizens are advised against sharing unverified or communalized information on social media. The police warned that strict legal action will be pursued against anyone disseminating false or inflammatory content that could disrupt social harmony.
