NSUI Urges Himachal Government to Maintain SPU Campus in Sundernagar
Call for Preservation of Sardar Patel University Campus
In Mandi, the local chapter of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has urged the Congress-led government of Himachal Pradesh to secure an alternative facility to keep the Sardar Patel University (SPU) campus operational in Sundernagar.
Under the leadership of former district vice-president Anit Jaswal, NSUI members presented a memorandum to Congress leader and ex-MLA Sohan Lal Thakur, expressing strong opposition to the proposed relocation of the university. They argued that moving the campus would hinder local students' access to affordable higher education.
Jaswal pointed out that while Sundernagar is a significant educational hub, it currently lacks vital postgraduate programs such as MA, MBA, and MCA. He called on the government to find a suitable alternative location within Sundernagar to facilitate the introduction of new academic courses, allowing students to receive quality education close to home.
In response to these concerns, Sohan Lal Thakur reassured NSUI members that efforts would be made to secure a dedicated building for the university campus, ensuring it remains in Sundernagar.
This demand comes amid a broader controversy regarding the allocation of a newly constructed building initially designated for SPU but later reassigned to MLSM College. Completed in 2020 under a centrally funded initiative, the building has remained unused for a significant time. Recently, the Directorate of Higher Education transferred its use to MLSM College, leading to criticism from various stakeholders.
University officials previously indicated that the infrastructure is essential for SPU’s development, particularly as the institution is still in its formative years. There were plans to initiate academic activities in the building, and university leaders had reportedly raised objections to the government's decision.
The situation has also led to political repercussions, with opposition leaders accusing the state administration of overlooking the university's needs and jeopardizing students' futures in the area. Student organizations, including NSUI, are actively protesting and demanding immediate government action to safeguard and enhance the SPU-Sundernagar campus.
