Incident Overview

Imphal, Mar 29: The Nagaland Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) faction has refuted claims of its involvement in a late-night ambush that occurred in Hongbei village, Manipur, resulting in the deaths of four NSCN/GPRN (Eastern Flank) members. They characterized the event as a 'failed operation' and vowed to take action against those accountable.

Details of the Attack

The ambush transpired around 9:20 PM on Saturday along the Imphal–Kasom Khullen route, a region notorious for armed group activities near the Indo-Myanmar border.

In a statement from its Publicity and Information Bureau, the Naga Army's General Headquarters clarified that no offensive orders had been issued against any faction at this time.

Investigation and Reactions

"An investigation is currently underway to determine the facts surrounding this tragic event. Those responsible for this failed operation will face consequences as per the NARR. We urge the public to remain cautious and not be influenced by social media narratives," the statement added.

In response, security forces have initiated combing operations in the nearby forest areas due to concerns about potential retaliatory attacks, a common occurrence following such incidents.

Police Inquiry

Authorities conducted a site investigation on Sunday, but the assailants had already fled the scene.

Reports indicate that six cadres were in a vehicle when they were ambushed shortly after arriving in Hongbei. Four were killed instantly, while two managed to escape.

Identification of Victims

The Government of the People’s Republic of Nagalim (GPRN), Eastern Flank, released a condolence message identifying the deceased as Major (Posthumous) Sochipem Phungshok, Sergeant Major (Posthumous) Zairay Vasah, Sergeant (Posthumous) Bahle Alhapya, and Sergeant (Posthumous) Thansomi Washi, noting they were 'killed in the line of duty.'

Allegations of Internal Conflict

The group claimed that their members were ambushed by 'armed individuals' led by two second lieutenants, alleging that the shooting was ordered directly, raising suspicions of possible internal strife.

"Our members were returning from Kasom Khullen and were halted at the Hongbei village junction between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM by 2nd Lieut. Mathotmi from Shihai Khunou village and 2nd Lieut. Starling from Lairam village, along with their group. During the encounter, some said, 'It's us, let them go.' However, 2nd Lieut. Mathotmi commanded, 'It's them we are ordered to shoot,'" the statement detailed.

Public Response

The killings have sparked widespread reactions, with sympathizers expressing their condolences on social media, highlighting the ongoing tensions in the border area.
