Odegaard Dismisses Fitness Concerns

As Norway gears up for their FIFA World Cup debut against Iraq, captain Martin Odegaard has alleviated any worries regarding his fitness. This marks Norway's first World Cup appearance since 1998, where they reached the round of 16. The team, featuring Arsenal's Odegaard and Manchester City's prolific scorer Erling Haaland, is eager to make a strong impression.

Despite facing some injury issues earlier this year, Odegaard played a pivotal role in Arsenal's successful season, helping them secure the Premier League title after a 22-year gap and finishing as runners-up in the UEFA Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.

Odegaard's Thoughts on Team Expectations

In a press conference, Odegaard expressed confidence, stating, "I feel good. I do not know what you are so worried about - yes, I have had some trouble, as you know, but I feel good now." Norway qualified for the World Cup by outperforming Italy and Israel, scoring 37 goals while conceding only five in a perfect run of eight victories.

He emphasized that the team's expectations have evolved since qualifying, saying, "That is where we have set the standard, after what we have done in qualifying. We are changing expectations, that is good, and I'm not going to say that's wrong. Now it is Iraq that matters."

Coach Confirms Fitness of Key Players

Norway's head coach Stale Solbakken confirmed that both Odegaard and Haaland are fit for the opening match. He noted that Haaland had an exceptional training session, describing it as his "best training session" on Friday. Solbakken humorously recounted a remarkable volley from Haaland during practice, stating, "It would have been the goal of the year in the World Cup if it had been broadcast."

Norway is placed in Group I alongside France, Iraq, and Senegal. This will be Norway's fourth appearance in the FIFA World Cup, with their best result being a round of 16 finish in 1998.
