NorthEast United FC Launches New Season


Guwahati, July 13: NorthEast United FC has officially commenced its 2025–26 season with an open training and media event at the Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, aiming to defend their Durand Cup title.


The atmosphere was electric as numerous fans gathered to witness the Highlanders' training session, which was overseen by head coach Juan Pedro Benali. This event marked the team's first public appearance ahead of the upcoming season.


New signings Chema Nunez, Jairo Samperio, and Andy Rodriguez made their debut in club colors, joining Indian players Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia and Lalbiakdika Vanlalvunga during the training. The entire squad is now in Guwahati, gearing up for their Durand Cup match against the Malaysian Armed Forces on August 2. NorthEast United FC is placed in Group E, alongside Rangdajied United FC and Shillong Lajong FC, with matches scheduled in Shillong.


After the training, Benali shared his excitement about returning to the Northeast, stating, “It feels wonderful to be back home and prepare for the season ahead. We are committed to representing the Highlanders and all eight states of the Northeast with pride.”


The coach emphasized the team's focus on taking things step by step, saying, “As the reigning champions, we don’t feel any pressure. Our priority is the first match. We aim to win the Cup, but that journey starts with winning our opener.”


Club captain Michel Zabaco expressed similar confidence, stating, “We have three weeks to get ready. Our goal is to improve daily. There are formidable teams in the competition, but we are prepared to give our all to defend our title.”


CEO Mandar Tamhane highlighted the importance of the Durand Cup for the club, remarking, “This tournament is a key event in the AIFF calendar. Organized by the Indian Armed Forces, it is Asia’s oldest club competition, and participating is both an honor and a privilege.”


Homegrown talents Redeem Tlang and Parthib Gogoi also spoke to the media, reiterating their commitment to providing an unforgettable season for their supporters.


As the Highlanders gear up for their first match in early August, the message from the team is clear: they are focused, united, and ready to battle for the Northeast.
