North Korea Advances Naval Power with New Missile Tests
Kim Jong Un Showcases Naval Ambitions
The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, has highlighted his nation's growing naval capabilities by overseeing a series of missile tests from the latest warship, the Choe Hyon. State media reports indicate that during exercises in the western seas, two strategic cruise missiles and three anti-ship missiles were launched from the 5,000-ton destroyer. The cruise missiles reportedly flew for over two hours, while the anti-ship missiles remained airborne for more than thirty minutes before hitting their targets. Images released by state media show Kim observing the launches alongside senior officials, emphasizing the destroyer's strategic importance.
Understanding the Choe Hyon Destroyer
What is Choe Hyon?
The Choe Hyon, a 5,000-ton destroyer first revealed in April 2025, is a key element in North Korea's efforts to modernize its naval forces. According to state media, this warship is designed to carry various weapon systems, including anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles capable of nuclear delivery. Kim has characterized the destroyer as a significant leap forward in enhancing North Korea's military reach and preemptive strike capabilities. This vessel is part of a larger initiative to establish a nuclear-capable navy that can exert influence beyond the Korean Peninsula.
However, analysts outside North Korea express skepticism regarding the destroyer's operational status. South Korean defense officials and experts have suggested that the development of the Choe Hyon may have involved Russian support, reflecting the strengthening military relationship between Pyongyang and Moscow. Questions also arise about whether the destroyer is fully operational or ready for combat.
The Choe Hyon is not an isolated project; North Korea is also working on additional destroyers of the same class, including the Kang Kon, which experienced damage during a failed launch but has since been repaired and relaunched. A third destroyer is currently under construction and is anticipated to be completed later this year.
These recent missile tests by North Korea highlight the regime's ongoing commitment to enhancing its nuclear capabilities and its readiness to respond swiftly. Kim Jong Un has asserted that the nation's nuclear forces will expand "limitlessly," indicating that the regime has no intention of halting its weapons development amidst ongoing tensions with South Korea and a diplomatic stalemate with the United States.
