Violent Clashes Erupt in Noida Over Wage Demands

Noida: A protest by workers in Noida's Phase 2, located in Gautam Buddha Nagar, escalated into violence on Monday as demonstrators clashed with law enforcement while demanding higher wages. The protest, which had been ongoing for three days as a sit-in, intensified with thousands of workers rallying across various industrial sectors.

The situation became particularly chaotic in Sector 1, Block 84, where some protesters reportedly set vehicles ablaze, resulting in at least two vehicles being completely destroyed. Eyewitness reports indicate that stone-pelting incidents occurred, causing damage to several vehicles and properties of local companies.

In Sector 62, large crowds of workers contributed to significant traffic disruptions, further complicating the situation. To control the unrest, local authorities deployed a substantial police presence to prevent additional property damage and maintain order.

This outbreak of violence occurred despite recent commitments from the district administration. On Sunday, officials from various sectors, including police and industrial representatives, met with workers to discuss their demands and promised to take action.

District Magistrate Medha Roopam announced that directives had been issued following these discussions, including provisions for workers to receive double pay for overtime and a guaranteed weekly day off. If employees are required to work on their designated rest day, they will also receive double compensation.

Furthermore, the administration mandated that all workers receive bonuses as per established regulations, with payments to be deposited directly into their bank accounts within the required timeframe.

In an effort to enhance labor conditions, new guidelines have been implemented across Gautam Buddha Nagar. These rules stipulate that all companies must pay wages by the 10th of each month, enforce double overtime compensation, and prohibit unauthorized salary deductions, which will incur penalties. Employers are also required to provide salary slips to all employees.

To address workers' grievances swiftly, a dedicated control room has been established. The district administration has called on workers to remain calm, refrain from spreading rumors, and cooperate with authorities to ensure peace in the area.
