Government Clarifies on Special Session for Women's Reservation

New Delhi, August 5 - Kiren Rijiju, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, stated on Wednesday night that there are no plans to convene a special parliamentary session between August 16 and 18 regarding the Women's Reservation and Delimitation Bills. The government is currently making renewed efforts to pass the constitutional amendment bill during the ongoing monsoon session. This bill aims to implement a 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for 2029 and to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816.

There has been speculation in certain political circles about the possibility of convening a special session of Parliament after Independence Day to reintroduce the Delimitation Bill and the Women's Reservation Amendment Bill. When asked about this, Rijiju denied any proposals for a special session. He mentioned to a news agency, 'There is no proposal to call a special session between August 16 and 18 regarding the Women's Reservation and Delimitation Bills.'

Meanwhile, sources indicated that Rijiju met with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on Wednesday to discuss the reintroduction of the bill, but no firm assurance was received from the Congress leader.
