NMC Revokes MBBS Course Recognition for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute

NMC Takes Action Against Medical Institute

Jammu, January 7, 2026: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially revoked the recognition of the MBBS program at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) located in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir. This decision was made following a surprise inspection conducted on January 2, 2026, which revealed several serious deficiencies within the institution.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC had previously granted the institute permission for 50 MBBS seats for the 2025-26 academic session, a permission that has now been rescinded. The inspection report highlighted the following major shortcomings:

  • 39% shortage in teaching faculty.

  • Insufficient number of tutors, demonstrators, and senior residents.

  • Significant deficiencies in clinical materials and infrastructure.

  • Serious violations of minimum standards.

The NMC clarified that this action was taken under Section 28(7) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, which allows for surprise inspections.

Impact on Students' Future: In light of concerns regarding the current students enrolled at the college, the NMC has instructed the Jammu and Kashmir administration to accommodate all students in supernumerary seats at other recognized medical colleges in the region. This measure ensures that no student will lose their MBBS seat and that their education can continue uninterrupted.

This decision comes at a time when the college was already embroiled in controversies regarding MBBS admissions. Some Hindu organizations had protested against the selection of most students from the first batch of 50 seats; however, the NMC has stated that the basis for revoking recognition was solely due to technical and infrastructural deficiencies.
