Nitish Kumar's New Role in Rajya Sabha

Patna: On Friday, Nitish Kumar officially took his oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, marking a pivotal moment in his extensive political career.

He arrived in New Delhi on Thursday, accompanied by Sanjay Jha and Vijay Kumar Choudhary, to finalize the formalities for his entry into the Upper House of Parliament.

This milestone places Nitish Kumar among a distinguished group of leaders who have served in all four legislative bodies: the State Legislative Assembly, State Legislative Council, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha.

This achievement is viewed as a remarkable distinction in his lengthy political journey.

Kumar was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 this year and subsequently resigned from his position as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) on March 30.

This resignation signifies the conclusion of his long-standing association with the Bihar Legislative Council.

He first joined the council in 2006 and served four consecutive terms: 2006-2012, 2012-2018, 2018-2024, and now 2024 onwards, before stepping down.

Since becoming Chief Minister in November 2005, Nitish Kumar has maintained his position through his membership in the Legislative Council, opting not to contest Assembly elections.

Although he was elected as an MLA from Harnaut in 1985 and has also served in the Lok Sabha, his tenure as Chief Minister has primarily been anchored in the Upper House of the State Legislature.

With his resignation from the Legislative Council, constitutional requirements dictate that he must also resign as Chief Minister.

Upon his arrival in New Delhi, Kumar elaborated on his decision, stating, 'I have achieved a lot in Bihar. Now I believe it is time for me to be here, and that is what I am doing.'

He added, 'I will resign from my position there (Patna) and focus my efforts here (New Delhi). I plan to step down in three or four days. New individuals will be appointed as Chief Minister and Ministers.'

Kumar's transition to the Rajya Sabha signifies the start of a new chapter in his political career, which began in 1985.

His formal induction into the Upper House is anticipated to influence Bihar's political landscape in the months ahead.
