Nitin Gadkari Addresses E20 Fuel Controversy, Claims Organized Campaign Against It
Minister's Remarks on E20 Fuel Opposition
In New Delhi, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has made significant claims regarding the backlash against ethanol-blended petrol, known as E20 fuel. Speaking at an event organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), he asserted that the opposition to the decision to mix 20% ethanol in petrol was a 'well-orchestrated campaign funded by money.' He noted that there was considerable confusion and uproar surrounding E20 fuel three months ago, but he believes that such dissent has now completely dissipated.
Legalization of Flex-Fuel Vehicles
Gadkari's comments came shortly after the government announced amendments to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules of 1989. This amendment now legally permits the manufacturing and operation of 'flex-fuel' vehicles that can run on E100 (100% ethanol) in the country.
Importance of Alternative Fuels
The minister emphasized the necessity of increasing the use of alternative fuels like ethanol to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuel imports. He highlighted that this shift would not only benefit the environment but also save valuable foreign exchange for India. Gadkari shared a statistic indicating that a mere $1 increase in crude oil prices on the international market raises India's annual import bill by ₹18,000 crores.
Commitment to Road Quality
Additionally, Gadkari addressed concerns regarding the construction and quality of national highways. Acknowledging complaints about the poor condition of roads and highways on social media, he mentioned that he recently conducted a thorough review of 700 to 800 road projects. He firmly stated that there will be no compromise on road quality and assured citizens that travelers on highways will not face any inconvenience in the next two years.
