Nishad Kumar's Remarkable Achievement at the Asian Para Games

Indian Paralympian Nishad Kumar made headlines at the Asian Para Games by clinching two gold medals. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed pride in his accomplishments and the joy he brought to his parents. Nishad, who served as India's flag-bearer during the closing ceremony, kicked off his campaign with a gold in the men's long jump T47, achieving a remarkable distance of 7.11 meters, marking his debut in this event. He followed this success with another gold in the men's high jump T47, where he cleared 2.04 meters, setting a new record for the Games. With this double victory, Nishad joined the ranks of Indian athletes who have won two golds in a single edition of the Asian Para Games, alongside para-runner Ankur Dhama and armless archer Sheetal Devi.

Training Regimen and Mental Preparation

In discussing his preparation, Nishad emphasized the significance of muscle memory and a positive mindset. He dedicated an entire season to mastering long jump techniques, ensuring thorough training. "My training was very effective. In December, my team and I decided to focus solely on long jump, leaving no stone unturned. We approached it step by step, which was a new learning curve for me. Muscle memory is crucial for learning new skills quickly. I concentrated on my mindset, understanding that the essence of the sport lies in how you feel during training. If you maintain a positive mindset, you can achieve anything," he stated.

On winning the medals, he humorously remarked, "I feel fantastic. My heart is filled with joy."

Family Pride and National Recognition

Nishad shared heartfelt moments with his parents after his victories, highlighting their pride as they watched him on television. He noted that during the closing ceremony, only one flag-bearer could be chosen, which was Mona Agarwal. "Holding the tricolor during the closing ceremony was an incredible feeling. Although I was supposed to lead the team, Mona was selected as the flag-bearer. It was an honor to be recognized in this way, and my family was thrilled to hear the news," he explained.

"After winning the medals, I spoke to my mother first to seek her blessings. She was overwhelmed with happiness and a bit emotional. For her, seeing me on TV was a dream come true. Parents were ecstatic about my two medals, and when I told them I was the flag-bearer, they turned on their TVs again, filled with joy," he added.

India's Record-Breaking Performance

Commenting on India's impressive tally of 114 medals, including 30 golds, Nishad remarked, "We surprised everyone. No one anticipated that a small team would achieve such success. Our performance is beyond words. The best athletes represented India, and we ended up with more medals than participants. Many young athletes competed in their first Asian Para Games, showcasing their talents on a grand stage. I also broke my own record in high jump and set a new Asian Games record," he noted.

He also highlighted the shift in mindset among athletes following India's hosting of the World Para Athletics Championships last year, where the country secured 22 medals, including six golds. "The World Championships changed the players' perspectives, leading to improved performances and attracting sponsors. The positivity from the event has been transformative," he stated.

Future Aspirations and Celebrations

Looking ahead, Nishad expressed excitement about returning home to a warm welcome and enjoying home-cooked meals. He appreciates the love and support he receives from fans both online and offline. "We are diligently working towards our future goals. I have always been welcomed warmly. As the only athlete from Himachal Pradesh to win multiple Paralympic medals and Asian Games golds, it’s a significant achievement for me and my village. The villagers are proud, saying, 'If a boy is to be like this, let it be me.' It feels wonderful to hear such sentiments. When I visit my village, I enjoy meeting the children who are thrilled to see me. I also look forward to indulging in home-cooked dishes like makke ki roti with saag and white butter," he concluded.
