Nine Suspected Rohingyas Detained Near India-Bangladesh Border
Detention of Rohingyas in Cachar District
Silchar, Aug 13: Assam Police apprehended nine individuals suspected to be Rohingyas, including women and children, close to the India-Bangladesh border in Cachar district, as reported by an official on Wednesday.
On Tuesday night, locals from Bishwanbharpur village in the Katigorah region noticed a group of unfamiliar individuals. After questioning them, they alerted the police.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Cachar, Numal Mahatta, confirmed to a news outlet that the detained individuals were indeed Rohingya nationals who had arrived in Cachar from various locations across India.
“We are currently interrogating the detainees to gather more information regarding their situation,” the SSP stated.
According to reports, the individuals claimed they had illegally entered India approximately 20 years ago and had been working in Hyderabad in various jobs, as per the police officer.
During questioning, they expressed a desire to return to Bangladesh, citing relatives there and mentioning that two middlemen had assured them assistance in crossing the border.
The nine individuals, who identified themselves as Rohingyas, had traveled by train from Hyderabad and were guided by a middleman to a forest near the border, where they spent an entire day without food or water.
They emerged from the forest in the evening in search of food, which led to their discovery by local residents, the officer explained.
They have since been taken to Silchar, and further investigations are ongoing.
