Arrest of Nigerian National in Silchar

Silchar, Mar 27: In a collaborative effort, the Cachar Police and the Assam Rifles apprehended a 44-year-old Nigerian man for allegedly living in Silchar without a valid visa, following intelligence reports.

On Thursday, Additional SP (Crime) Rajat Pal confirmed that the individual, named Emeka Esader, was spotted wandering the streets of Silchar with a group of people. Local residents were reportedly providing him with shelter, food, and other assistance.

“Initially, he was reluctant to reveal his identity. However, after further questioning, he acknowledged that he was a Nigerian who had arrived in Silchar from Delhi. His visa had expired, and the legitimacy of his documents is currently being verified. There are suspicions that he may have come to the city to avoid authorities or for other undisclosed reasons,” stated Pal.

As part of the investigation, four other individuals—including a woman from Mizoram and three locals—have also been detained for allegedly aiding Esader’s stay without proper police verification.

“A case has been filed at Silchar Police Station (Case No. 282/2026) under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Passport Act. The invoked sections include 61(2), 318(4), 319(2), 336(3), and 340(2) of the BNS, in conjunction with Section 14A of the Foreigners Act and Sections 12(1A)(G), 12(1A)(B), and 12(2) of the Passport Act,” the Additional SP added.

Pal urged the residents of Cachar district to assist with the ongoing investigation. “We are conducting a comprehensive inquiry into this matter. Until all details are confirmed, residents are encouraged to perform proper identity checks on any foreign nationals or individuals residing in rented properties,” he concluded.
