NIA Reveals Yasin Malik's Links with Pakistani Leaders in Court Filing

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has informed the Delhi High Court that Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik maintained connections with senior Pakistani officials, including the Prime Minister and President. Utilizing these contacts, Malik advocated for the separation of Jammu and Kashmir from India. In a detailed counter-affidavit filed in response to an appeal seeking the death penalty for Malik, the NIA stated that his claims of interactions with various Indian Prime Ministers are irrelevant to the terrorism charges against him and do not absolve him of his crimes.

Court Proceedings and NIA's Arguments

During the hearing, special public prosecutor Akshay Malik informed the bench led by Justice Naveen Chawla about the filing of the counter-affidavit. The court acknowledged this and ordered that a copy be provided to Malik, who participated in the proceedings via video conferencing from prison. The next hearing is scheduled for July 21. The NIA emphasized that Malik's repeated references to political leaders, bureaucrats, and public figures were merely attempts to garner public sympathy and hold no significance in the criminal proceedings.

Dismissal of Claims by NIA

The agency rejected the notion that citing prominent individuals or alleging government collusion diminishes the severity of the proven crimes against Malik. Specifically addressing Malik's claims of executive relationships with former Prime Ministers such as V.P. Singh, Chandra Shekhar, P.V. Narasimha Rao, H.D. Deve Gowda, I.K. Gujral, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Manmohan Singh, the NIA argued that such assertions have no bearing on the current case and cannot serve as grounds for leniency or evasion of criminal liability.

Providing a comprehensive overview of its investigation, the NIA reiterated that a significant conspiracy involving separatist leaders and banned terrorist organizations like Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba has been uncovered. This conspiracy aimed to wage war against the Indian government and involved raising funds through illegal means, including hawala, to support terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
