NIA Expands Charges in Assam Independence Day Bomb Plot
New Developments in Assam Bomb Case
New Delhi, Jan 10: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has added two more individuals to the list of accused in the case concerning the IED seizure related to the Assam Independence Day incident of 2024, bringing the total number of accused to five.
A supplementary chargesheet was submitted to the NIA special court in Guwahati on Friday, naming Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi as the new accused.
Both suspects, hailing from Dibrugarh district, were apprehended by the NIA in June 2025 after the agency took over the investigation from the Dispur police in September 2024.
Previously, three other individuals were charged in this case in June of the previous year.
Investigations by the NIA indicated that Bhargab and Sumu Gogoi had allegedly funneled terror financing to Jahnu Boruah, who reportedly admitted to planting four of the eleven improvised explosive devices (IEDs) confiscated by law enforcement in August 2024.
These IEDs were purportedly placed as part of a protest and a boycott of Independence Day, as called for by the chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), Paresh Baruah, according to officials.
The Assam Police initially registered the case at the Dispur police station, which involved an alleged conspiracy by the banned ULFA(I) to wage war against the Indian government through multiple IED attacks across Assam.
The investigation began in the lead-up to Independence Day on August 15, 2024, when ULFA(I) claimed responsibility for planting explosives in various locations statewide as part of their boycott initiative.
At that time, police and intelligence reports indicated that explosives were placed at over 20 sites, including eight in Guwahati, prompting increased security measures throughout Assam.
Following initial arrests and inquiries by the Assam Police, which included detaining several suspects and alleged associates from various districts, the case was transferred to the NIA in September 2024 due to its connections to terrorism and implications across districts.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Jahnu Boruah, who allegedly confessed to planting multiple devices and helped identify financial channels associated with the conspiracy.
Earlier, Paresh Baruah, along with Abhijit Gogoi alias Abhijeet Gogoi and Jahnu Boruah alias Arnob Asom alias Huntu, was charged on June 13, 2025, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act in a Guwahati court.
With this supplementary chargesheet, the NIA has now officially accused five individuals in the case, while investigations continue to uncover further operatives and networks linked to the alleged coordinated bombing attempts across Assam.
