NIA Conducts Raid in McLeodganj Amid Dalai Lama's Birthday Celebrations

Significant Operation in Dharamshala
Dharamshala: In a notable operation coinciding with the 90th birthday festivities of the Dalai Lama, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) executed a raid early on Friday morning, July 4, 2025, at the home of a resident from Chamba located in Ward Number 4 of McLeodganj, Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh.
The individual is currently under scrutiny for alleged involvement in fraudulent activities, money laundering, and potential ties to Khalistani networks.
The suspect, known as Sunny, is the son of Ghindro Ram and lives in McLeodganj, where he runs a communication center near the Dalai Lama’s temple. He is married to a Russian national who has been residing with him for several years.
As per official reports, Sunny is accused of deceiving individuals by promising to facilitate foreign travel. Furthermore, the NIA is investigating financial transactions that could be associated with terror financing and support for Khalistani extremist factions, both domestically and internationally.
The ongoing raid has led to the confiscation of various electronic devices, including computer hard drives, mobile phones, and financial records, which have been forwarded for forensic examination.
Local police officials mentioned that they were not notified in advance regarding the NIA’s operation. A police spokesperson stated, “We are examining the particulars. This seems to be a sensitive case related to national security.”
A senior official from Dharamshala confirmed that this operation is part of a larger initiative targeting terror funding and international connections to banned Khalistani organizations, particularly in light of heightened security measures for VVIPs attending the Dalai Lama’s significant event.
