Imphal, Sept 30: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended two additional suspects related to the armed ambush on the former Chief Minister of Manipur's convoy that occurred in June 2024.
The individuals have been named as Jangminlun Singson, also known as Franky, aged 44, from Bethel in Churachandpur district, and Thangjoel Haokip, referred to as Thangboi, aged 21, from Gamphajang Tuibong in Churachandpur, according to a statement released by the NIA on Tuesday.
The agency noted that both suspects had been previously detained in a different case and were arrested again in this matter based on evidence collected during the ongoing investigation.
“The investigation has confirmed the involvement of these two suspects, along with others, in the orchestration and execution of the ambush, as well as their connections to other conspirators,” the NIA stated.
The arrests are linked to FIR No. 133(6)2024, which was filed at the New Keithelmanbi Police Station in July 2024.
Both suspects were presented before the Special Court in Manipur (for NIA Cases) located in Thoubal, where they were remanded to eight days of police custody.
These arrests mark the third and fourth individuals taken into custody in relation to this case.
The ambush occurred on June 10, 2024, near K Sinam village in Kangpokpi district, targeting the convoy of the then Chief Minister.
During the attack, two security personnel were severely injured, and several government vehicles were damaged.
Separate IED Attack Investigation
In another incident, the NIA has arrested a 48-year-old man from Churachandpur in connection with an IED attack that took place on April 7 at a residential property in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, resulting in the deaths of two minor children and injuries to their mother.
The suspect, Thangmang Haokip, was taken into custody on September 25 and is the second individual arrested in this case, as reported by the agency.
Previously, S Palal was arrested on August 12 and is currently in judicial custody.
The case was initially registered at Moirang Police Station before being transferred to the NIA on April 23. The agency indicated that Haokip's involvement was uncovered during the investigation.
Haokip was brought before the Special NIA Court-II in Imphal, where he was remanded to 12 days of police custody.
The NIA has stated that further investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend additional individuals allegedly involved in the attack.
