NHRC Responds to Shocking Case of Minor Giving Birth During Exams in Jajpur

NHRC Takes Action on Disturbing Incident
Jajpur: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has responded to a shocking case in Jajpur district involving a Class X minor girl who unexpectedly gave birth while taking her board exams. This action follows a petition from human rights advocate and lawyer Akhand, prompting the NHRC to issue a notice to the Jajpur Superintendent of Police, requesting a report on the actions taken within four weeks.
The incident occurred on February 26, 2025, when the girl, a student at Panchayat High School in Rampur, experienced severe abdominal pain and subsequently delivered a baby girl at the Bari Government Hospital.
She had completed two papers of the High School Certificate Examination and was set to take her Mathematics exam the following day, but her condition forced her to withdraw. The petitioner has accused the school authorities, Anganwadi staff, and local officials of serious negligence for failing to recognize the pregnancy, which raises concerns of potential sexual abuse and breaches the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The petitioner is calling for accountability for those involved, rehabilitation for the victim, and preventive measures in educational institutions. The NHRC is treating this matter with urgency and has requested a comprehensive report from the Jajpur SP within the stipulated timeframe.
