Celebrating a Century of Sports Ties

New Delhi. On November 4, during the first ODI match against India, New Zealand cricketers will don a unique limited-edition jersey. This special jersey has been introduced to commemorate the centenary of sports relations between the two nations. The design of the shirt has been crafted by three artists: two of Indian descent residing in New Zealand (Shiv Narandas and Jai Pancha) and a local artist (Ben Thomson), showcasing the cultural heritage of both countries.

Thomson has incorporated the Māori Kowhaiwhai pattern against a backdrop of Hehe lines. This design aims to connect the living with those who have passed, honoring the individuals who have fostered the relationship between the two nations, while celebrating its significance for players, fans, and those working behind the scenes.

According to New Zealand Cricket's website, Narandas and Pancha have included three Indian motifs that symbolize unity: the lotus, which is India's national flower; a repetitive Ogee pattern inspired by Indian architecture; and a mandala, which provides a symmetrical structure that naturally aligns with Māori design systems.

Glen Critchley, Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer of New Zealand Cricket, expressed his excitement about the jersey, anticipating its popularity among collectors. He stated, 'We are very pleased with this design. The artists have created a beautiful balance between distinctive Māori and Indian designs, reflecting the relationship between our countries. Sports strengthen unity between New Zealand and India, and we hope this shirt remains a memorable item for cricket fans in both nations for many years to come.'

In the upcoming weeks, India and New Zealand will compete in a total of 12 matches. The tour will kick off with five T20 matches, starting with the first match on October 22 in Christchurch. Following the T20 series, a five-match ODI series will commence on November 4, leading into two Test matches.

Today, New Zealand announced its squad for the five ODIs. Rachin Ravindra, who missed the T20 team due to a shoulder injury last month, has made a return. Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, and Tim Seifert have also been included in the ODI team. Allen and Ferguson last played an ODI three years ago, while Seifert's last 50-over match was a year and a half ago. Notably, due to the two Test matches starting just four days after the last ODI, several players will be released from the team after the first three matches to make way for others.
