Inauguration of the Turf Cricket Ground

On Friday, Tamil Nadu's Minister for Backwards Classes Welfare, Sampath Kumar, inaugurated a newly constructed turf cricket ground adjacent to the Nehru Stadium in Coimbatore. He pledged that the state government would provide all necessary assistance to resolve the challenges faced by the stadium and its athletes. The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) oversaw the construction of this facility. After the inauguration, the minister engaged in a cricket match with Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar and addressed petitions from sports officials regarding the stadium's needs.

Infrastructure Challenges Addressed

In an interview, Sampath Kumar was questioned about the stadium's ongoing electricity issues, which have forced it to rely on generators for over ten years. He assured, "The government will provide all necessary support to the stadium. We are committed to developing students' skills and nurturing talent. We will address any challenges faced by the players and work to resolve them effectively."

Plans for Future Development

When asked about the government's intentions to refurbish the synthetic athletics track and establish a new football ground, Sampath Kumar responded, "We will discuss these matters and provide updates thereafter." He also mentioned that necessary actions would be taken regarding the proposed football field.

Government's Commitment to Sports

This inauguration aligns with the Tamil Nadu government's broader initiative to enhance sports and develop talent statewide. Recently, Chief Minister Vijay launched the 'Dream Olympics' program, honoring Tamil Nadu athletes who excelled or participated in the 20th Asian Games 2026 and the 46th Chess Olympiad 2026. The event, organized by SDAT at The Leela Palace in Chennai, celebrated the athletes' achievements and included cash rewards for their performances.
