New Training Initiative for Electric Vehicles Launched in India
Collaboration for Green Skills Training
New Delhi, June 13: The Directorate General of Training (DGT), part of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), has partnered with Shell India to introduce a training program aimed at preparing the youth for careers in Electric Vehicles (EV) and green energy sectors, as announced by the MSDE on Friday.
The Green Skills and Electric Vehicles (EV) training initiative is designed to equip both students and educators with essential skills for the future in green energy and e-mobility. This program aligns with the government's ongoing efforts to promote green energy and the adoption of EVs as part of its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for MSDE and Minister of State for Education, stated, “Our partnership with Shell India underscores the government's commitment to integrating skilling with sustainability. The transition to green energy and electric mobility is not only an environmental necessity but also a significant opportunity for India to excel through innovation and talent.”
He further emphasized, “This initiative is part of our broader vision to cultivate a workforce that is not only ready for jobs but also prepared for climate challenges. We aim to empower young Indians with the skills necessary to lead in the global green economy.”
As part of this collaboration, green skills training will be implemented through a structured multi-tier model at selected National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) located in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
The curriculum, developed collaboratively by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and DGT, encompasses topics such as EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, digital tools, and safety protocols.
In the initial phase, the program will offer a 240-hour advanced EV technician course at four NSTIs, a 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course at 12 ITIs with Shell-supported labs, and a 50-hour foundational green skills module at additional ITIs lacking physical labs, according to the MSDE.
The initiative also includes a Training of Trainers (ToT) program for over 250 instructors, with certifications co-branded by Shell and DGT, along with structured placement support to improve industry readiness.
Additionally, specialized EV skill labs will be established in select ITIs and NSTIs, providing hands-on training and expert-led sessions that meet industry standards.
Beyond practical lab experiences, the program offers placement assistance and co-branded certifications to participants who successfully complete the training, thereby enhancing their employability in the green energy and EV sectors.
Mansi Madan Tripathy, Chairperson of Shell Group of Companies in India and Senior Vice President of Shell Lubricants, Asia-Pacific, remarked, “Through our collaboration with DGT and Edunet Foundation, we are equipping students with practical skills that are essential for the future in green energy and electric mobility. This initiative empowers youth to succeed in a changing energy landscape and contribute to India’s net-zero goals.”
