New Safety Regulations for Commercial Vehicles in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh Implements Stricter Vehicle Safety Measures
Lucknow, January 6, 2026: The Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has announced significant measures to enhance the safety and fitness checks of commercial vehicles. A new directive mandates the installation of a Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) along with a panic button in all commercial vehicles, including taxis, maxi cabs, and buses. This regulation took effect on January 1, 2026.
According to the order issued by the Additional Transport Commissioner (IT):
- This rule is immediately applicable to newly registered commercial vehicles.
- Existing commercial vehicles (those already registered) have until March 31, 2026, to comply. Enforcement will begin on April 1, 2026.
- Failure to install the VLTD device will result in the inability to renew the vehicle's fitness certificate, registration, and PUC.
ARTO Administrator Alok Kumar stated that this initiative aims to enhance the safety of women and passengers while ensuring real-time tracking of vehicles. The panic button will facilitate immediate assistance in emergencies.
The Transport Department believes that these regulations will lead to a reduction in road accidents and better adherence to fitness standards for commercial vehicles. Vehicle owners are urged to install the VLTD device from authorized dealers as soon as possible.
