New Political Alliance Emerges Ahead of West Bengal Elections 2026

Political Landscape Shifts in West Bengal

As the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections approach, the political dynamics in the state are rapidly evolving. Humayun Kabir, a suspended member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has announced a formal and 'unbreakable' alliance between his new party, the 'Aam Janata Unnayan Party' (AJUP), and Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM. Kabir referred to Owaisi as his 'big brother,' signaling a new polarization in the state's political arena. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Kabir appeared both emotional and assertive, clarifying that this alliance is not merely an electoral pact but a long-term political partnership.

Candidates and Campaign Plans

Kabir revealed that his party plans to contest approximately 182 to 192 seats, with AIMIM fielding candidates in key constituencies such as Malda, Murshidabad, and Birbhum. To strengthen the alliance, Owaisi is set to conduct at least 20 major rallies across Bengal, starting on April 1 in Baharampur.

Commitment to the Alliance

Kabir emphasized, "This alliance will never break. As long as I am alive, Owaisi will remain my big brother, and together we will fight for the rights of Bengal." He expressed confidence that the Muslim community in Bengal stands with them, and both parties will campaign with greater strength.

Opposition's Reaction: Allegations of 'Vote Splitting'

The TMC and other opposition parties have labeled this alliance as 'vote-splitting' politics. TMC MP Sougata Roy criticized the move as a 'bad development,' claiming that Owaisi is effectively aiding the BJP. He argued that this alliance could alienate the Muslim electorate and would not have any electoral impact.

Opposition parties, including Congress and other secular groups, believe that this coalition will divide 'secular votes,' potentially benefiting the BJP.

Future Rally Plans

Kabir stated, "I consider him my big brother, and I am fighting alongside him in the elections. I have appealed to my big brother, and he will join me in at least 20 rallies." The AJUP leader confirmed that rallies will be held in significant constituencies, including Murshidabad, North Bengal, Malda, Birbhum, North Dinajpur, Asansol, and Kolkata. He announced, "Our first rally will be on April 1 in Baharampur, where my big brother will be present at 1:00 PM. I will host this inaugural public meeting with millions in attendance alongside him."

Alliance's Longevity

Kabir further mentioned that dates for subsequent rallies will be announced soon, adding that leaders from Bihar and Hyderabad will also participate. As the elections draw nearer, he reiterated his commitment to following Owaisi's lead in every aspect of the campaign. He firmly stated, "Through this alliance, I will adhere to whatever decisions my brother makes in the coming days. This alliance will never break," reinforcing his dedication to this partnership. Kabir clarified that this coalition is not just for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections but will continue for future elections as well, asserting, "As long as I am alive and in politics, the journey we began together in 2026 will persist."

Opposition Criticism of the Alliance

Earlier, on March 23, opposition leaders criticized the alliance between AIMIM and suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir. They warned that such moves could dilute votes ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections and weaken 'secular parties.' TMC MP Sougata Roy described it as a 'bad development,' suggesting it could isolate the Muslim electorate. According to reports, Roy stated to journalists in the Parliament complex, "Owaisi's organization is actually helping the BJP. However, it will have no effect. They lack strength and will not receive votes."
